Buying a Diamond

4 C's of Diamond Quality

Color

Color

The color scale extends from D (colorless) to Z (yellow or brown)
Most people have the assumption that resale quality diamonds are colorless, however truly colorless diamonds are extremely rare. Most diamonds are in the nearly colorless range with slight tints of yellow.
Color grades are determined by comparing each diamond to a master set; a set of 5 diamonds that represent a color range on the color scale. Each letter grade represents a range of color and is a measure of how noticeable a color is.

Clarity

There are 11 clarity grades on the grading scale, ranging from Flawless to I3
Diamonds form under tremendous heat and pressure so it is extremely rare to find a diamond completely free of internal or external inclusions. These characteristics help gemologists separate natural diamonds from synthetic and simulants and identify individual stones.

Cut

The cut scale ranges from excellent to poor
A diamonds beautiful sparkle comes from its complex relationship with light. This beauty comes from three different attributes, Brightness, Fire and Scintillation.

  • Brightness is the combination of all white light reflecting from the surface or interior of a diamond.
  • Fire describes the "flares" of color emitted from a diamond.
  • Scintillation describes the pattern of light and dark areas and the sparkle you see when the diamond moves.

  • A diamonds proportions affect its light performance, which in turn affects its beauty and overall appeal. Diamonds with fine proportions, symmetry, and polish optimize their interaction with light, and have increased brightness, fire, and scintillation.

    Carat Weight

For diamonds under one carat, each carat is divided into 100 points, similar to pennies in a dollar.

    0.75ct= 75 points
    ½ ct=50 points

Why buying a diamond online is not always reliable

Some turn to the internet when purchasing a diamond because they think they are getting the same quality diamonds that you would find in a reputable jewelry store, at a lower price. But finding a less expensive diamond online does not necessarily mean you're getting the best value. Below are some of the reasons why buying online is not the best way to go.

  • You may have done your research on the 4c's of a diamond and know exactly what you are looking for, but diamonds are like snowflakes, no two diamonds are the same. You will never really know what you are purchasing until you can see the diamond in person.

  • You will not have a certified GIA diamond specialist looking through hundreds of diamonds, finding the best one possible for you. Sawyer Jewelers has a variety of different sources that we rely on when looking for your perfect diamond.

  • A diamond always looks good when it stands alone. Buying a diamond online does not give you the ability to compare your different options.

  • Buying a diamond that comes with a grading certificate does not guarantee that the certificate matches the diamond.

  • You will have to spend time and money to verify that what you purchased it really what you received.

  • You are not always guaranteed to get the exact diamond you paid for. Many online retailers do not own the diamonds they post. If the diamond you purchase is already sold, the online retailer may substitute the diamond with a similar one.
